A Review of Avalon Orchard – An Organic pick-your-own Apple Orchard

Hi guys!
I put the baby to sleep and jumped to the computer right away to blog about this exciting place my family has been to yesterday. Avalon Orchard, its an ORGANIC pick-your-own apple orchard. Why am I so excited about this? Because this is the only organic orchard in my area! We do have lots of local orchards with delicious apples, but if I have to choose an orchard which is not too far from where I live and organic, then I choose that! First of all the location is great, its located in Innisfil, Ontario which is only 40 minutes from Vaughan (where I live). This orchard is located in a beautiful quite place full of trees and gorgeous hiking trails. They even have a sky diving area and a great farmers market really close by. The apples are yummy and the price is great! $1.69/lb ($1.49 if you buy over 20lbs of apples), ohh and they don’t any admission fees! They opened the orchard on September 8th and we went there on the very next day, so apples were still pretty small, although some types were mature enough. Also this year due to drought many apples just didn’t make it but they still have plenty of apples. The orchard itself is huge with tons of trees with more than 10 different kinds of apples. What I like about this orchard in particular is the way they plant certain types of apples which are naturally resistant to bugs and fungi to insure they stay organic and in order not to use synthetic pesticides. This is why you’ll find there apples that you don’t usually see in stores. The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold; typical of this time of year. Our girls enjoyed it very much too especially our 3 year old who couldn’t stop picking the smallest apples she could find just because they are so cute and delicious! We picked 3 kinds of apples and they are all yummy and juicy, great for juicing, smoothies, baking and salads.  So we are all ready for the upcoming Rosh Ha Shana, The Jewish New Years, when we have a custom of eating lots of apples dipped in honey, a symbol of a sweeter year to come.

Check out this orchard you will not regret it!

Much love,

Dorit
